"People pretty much suck, I think," Zoe says with an amused smile, and belatedly opens her purse to get out a handkerchief to hand Sandy. "And sometimes they're also wonderful, to make up for it."

Someday she will tell Sandy how she walked into a bar where Victor was singing - of all things - 'Whose Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf' and decided to be...sassy, she supposes, and request 'Mack the Knife.' Relationships just started weirdly.

"Not everyone," Zoe says, shaking her head. "But it's a popular game, especially up at the Castle. And Sandy? She gets to decide on what the counter is, but that doesn't mean you can't push back a little. She can say the challenge is poker, but you can say the challenge is...four hours. Otherwise," she says, "it really is luck, and that's not a challenge.

"In a longer game, though, it's both luck and bluffing, and reading your opponent." And it will be fine. Even if Sandy doesn't win the counter, it'll be okay. "It sounds fun, doesn't it?" she asks. "We can get away from the Spade men for a night."
