When Meghana returned to Kerala during last winter, she met a gurukkal. The gurukkal wanted to know "who the fuck taught you kalarippayat"? Okay, that wasn't exactly the words he used, but he quickly realized the broken nature of the young woman who used an unorthodox style of kalarippayat. Meghana vaguely explained that her family was on Diaspora from India in general. The gurukkal had noted it was strange blend of Southren style and Northern Style. Meghana quietly nodded as the man lectured her due to the worry about the safety of her soul and the skill on her hands. She assumed her grandfather Deepak or perhaps even her father had left the Deck a little while to learn the Southren style. More than likely Muni.

Didn't matter, really. All Meghana knew is that her father had told each of his children not to teach the skill outside the family. Jagan betrayed that, she suspects, many times over in an effort to provide for his family. Kanja is being sullen and refuses to even train with Meghana so she doubts he taught anyone. Meghana... didn't until today. However she has a thousand excuses. Leigh is really quite too old for complete training and the meippayat (basic moves in the Northern Style) and verumkai (Weaponless techinuqes in the Northern Style) are very basic. Kicks, stretches, things that will loosen her body. It'll be useful, more like an aggressive yog-

Okay, that's bull. It is kalarippayat. No matter how you dice it, but she's not teaching the advanced stuff and Meghana is never going to have kids so... She treks through the snow in a snowsuit rarely used to the Diamond Castle. She's greeted by a butler and she makes her way to seeing Leigh in the training rooms.

Leigh hasn't really learned how to fight, as such. Certainly Säde's tried to teach her, and she's done her best to learn at least some self-defence because that's useful, at least, but so far actual attacks are not really something she's willing to pick up.

Stretching, however, is good. Is supposed to help. And the cold is getting to her joints a little, but at least the training rooms have had the heat restored. So she's sitting crosslegged on the floor, chin on her hands, waiting for Meghana to arrive. She gives the Spade a small wave when she enters. "H'llo. Was it hard, getting here?"

She'll leave out the detail that most of the stretches she's showing is due to get one use to holding a sword and shield or a spear and shield. But it can be left out unless Leigh asks, and Meghana will explain origins. She gives the young girl a smile before putting her things down. She did stop off at a place to change into long white yoga pants and sweat shirt. A modification to her usual 'uniform' when training. Much too cold for her racer-back halter with a red band. "Somewhat, but others have been trekking across the Deck since ... I think late Wednesday. Most of the major paths are cleared out. Did you handle the power loss all right?"

"Uh huh. Mostly I went around sharing coats and things, like we did last year. Only it wasn't so early last year. And I've never used candles to go round at night before. It makes the castle," she waves a hand vaguely, "spookier and stuff, but that's okay."

She's dressed appropriately, in similar clothing except for sweat pants instead of yoga pants.

"Yeah, even the storybook Castles kinda suck when it comes to looking like normal hallways with this mess." Meghana couldn't help but agree. "I probably should have asked earlier, but did Sade give the okay for this?" More than likely, no one tossing her off back int the snow.

"Um, I said I was doin' exercises today," Leigh says, a little evasively. Practice, y'know. And with some help. She didn't ask with who." Leigh may have implied that it was a classmate of hers. And just basic things like they've been taught already.

It might have helped if she already knew that Säde knows Meghana, but since neither of them bring it up often and rarely speak to each other at all, it's not surprising the girl's in the dark.

In the end, it's bad blood and too many things have happened. The friendly young girl who was the shadow of her two popular older brothers became something entirely different.

"Well, that's honest enough." She is teaching exercises and she'll have to be wary on what she teaches. She could do high kicks at a fairly young age but Leigh can't kick as high as her. "We're going to get started with warm ups, I think. Simple stretches to get your limps awake. They're kinda akin to yoga. Is that similar to what Sade's been teaching you?"

"Mmhm. She tried to teach me the names too, but they keep getting jumbled up in my mind. And she lets me watch but I haven't tried the harder stuff yet, like," she gets up and leans backwards from the waist, "you're s'posed to grab your ankles from behind and be on your stomach? It looks kinda freaky."

"Not... for a little while, no." Though she might start out with yoga stretching because it was something Leigh was familiar with. "I think we're going to start off with neck and shoulder stretches though, and work our way down." Then toss in posses from some of the moves as they go along.

Leigh nods seriously. "Okay. Just show me and I'll follow." Meghana's an important person, and she came all this way in the snow. Leigh shouldn't waste her time and effort.

It's a hard balance between teacher and student, and few don't like to admit that. The teacher must also not waste the student's time. And if she cannot help Leigh cope with some of her growing pain, she fails. It doesn't matter what rank Leigh is. "All right, it's important to stay warm. We'll begin by standing up straight, spine like a tree, head like an owl."

Leigh copies Meghana's pose, though she doesn't really understand why 'like a tree' or 'an owl' is necessary. "How's this keep us warm?"
