{ o t a } now i know my a, b, c's...

She really should have been expecting this. There was no reason for her to be exempt from this task. Week by week, the duty had been passed to others, and she’d escaped from Karin with little more than dusting, cleaning dishes, watering flowers.

This week, though, she wasn’t as lucky. She lugged the cart of books down an arbitrarily chosen hallway in the Clubs Library. After taking a little breath, she pulled out the first book, staring at the cover. Alphabetize them, Karin had said flippantly, nudging Lexa over to the cart of books. They all should go in the fiction aisle.

Alphabetize. That... meant. In order. She frowned a little, tracing the letters on the cover with her finger. The first one... looked sort of like a line, then a curve, then another diagonal. She knew she’d seen it before...

At the music shop. It was the first letter in ‘records’, she was sure of it. That was... R. Her eyes flicked up to the books on the shelf in front of her. All the letters on the spines of the books blurred for a moment, then cleared as she leaned closer. The first letter in these books... Well, some started with a ladder type letter thing, maybe a ladder with one rung, while one of them started with a line next to another line.

She bit her lip, then looked back down to the book in her hands. This was going to take a while.

Creeping down to the library when she needs a break - and to occasionally check on Fin - is something of a habit of Tegan's, more so now than ever.

She will pause, however, when she notices Lexa's puzzled expression and make her way to the Two before clearing her throat.

Karin - all the Butlers, really - had very exacting standards. It was something that Tegan had always respected, personally, but many mistook it for malevolent intent when it was simply her way of trying to ensure that the Castle ran at its best.

Still: "I was actually about to ask you the same thing." Her eyes flicked to the book, still tucked behind Lexa's back, before returning to Lexa. The smile that followed was warm but genuine. "Though, alphabetizing; not the most interesting work one could be doing."

Ooooh. Shakespeare. <333

Or they could possibly find something that, while she might not enjoy it as such, would be a much better fit.

"And if you could be doing something else, what would you see yourself doing?"

"I don't doubt that." If nothing else, Lexa had determination, which was admirable if misguided in this case.

"But in my experience people tend to be happier doing things that interest them rather than the things that don't."

A Spade in Club Library is an unusual thing, and it's probably only the fact that Zoe's fairly harmless looking as Spades go and she has the legitimate excuse of looking for a volume of music history for her extremely pregnant cousin Jessie that has her browsing the shelves with a limited amount of suspicion from the Clubs. There's no reason for a Heart from Town to, well, waddle up to the Castles when Zoe spends half her day sometimes zipping around the Deck after all.

She's found the right book and is about to find Fin and beg and swear no harm will come to it while it's in Jessie's possession when she runs across Lexa.

"Oh," she says, stopping short. "Sorry, I didn't see you. Hi."

Zoe would just call that enough and leave - Lexa's working, after all - but she notices the Two is pushing the cart towards another aisle. "Wait," she says, "some of those books go on this shelf. See?" She points to three books starting with D, and then the shelf right on the other side of Lexa's head.

Zoe blinks at the Burnett book, next to a Devereaux, next to a Daniels, and then her eyes flick back to Lexa's face. The ducked head, the slightly worried expression, like she didn't want someone to figure out...

Oh. Could it be?

"Do you mind if I help?" she asks after a moment. "Otherwise I have to take this back to my cousin, and she'll probably be sending me out to pick up whatever she's craving. Pregnant," she says with a faint smile. "And she feels bad about calling her husband, you know."

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Zoe shrugs, and she slips the book she was borrowing into her brown leather purse before reaching up to put Devereaux and Daniels in the right places and tucking Burnett under her arm. "Not really," she says. "I'm only a Four, we don't have that much responsibility." Which is true as a general rule.

Just not in Zoe's particular case. She'll just work a little later tonight, that's all. "This one goes in the aisle before this one, I think," she adds. "With all of these," indicating all the As and all the Bs, "so maybe we should pull the cart that way?"

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
She smiles as she sorts the As into the right order and starts slotting them onto shelves. "It's Zoe," she says. "I'm from the Spades. What's yours?" She's working slowly, almost lazily, giving Lexa time to look at the books. Although she might be dyslexic too, Zoe supposes.

"It's nice to meet you too." Zoe shelves for a few minutes, efficient and neat - she used to do this in Heart Library before it went under Jordan's control. And she watches Lexa out of the corner of her eye as she does it. "Can I ask you something?"

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you...have trouble recognizing letters?" she asks. Sort of hesitantly, really, because it's not the sort of question people want to answer.

And she can understand why, really, but still.

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh." And then she goes back to shelving, for a few moments, her expression thoughtful. That was...well, nothing she'd ever had to worry about. She had tutors teaching her to read with two alphabets at the age of five. "But you'd like to learn?"

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
It was on the tip of her tongue to say that Lexa would need to know, but...that wouldn't get them anywhere. Probably. "You don't have to," she says instead. "But it could be a useful skill."

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
"I could," Zoe says. She was always doing this - volunteering. "If you wanted to. Or Christopher, in your Suit. He's a teacher."

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes." It is kind of a weird thing to volunteer, she admits. But she has a habit of doing these things impulsively. "There's nothing wrong with trying, is there?"

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Whenever you want to." Probably not now, though, with as much work as they have to do.

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That was what her mother had finally told her when she was about Lexa's age, about music. That Zoe would have to be the best at everything else, because she'd never rise in the Hearts the way Charlotte had. It makes her smile flicker a little. "I don't think you are," she says. "We'll try."

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not a problem." Either the teaching or the shelving, though she's referring to the latter. "I like organizing things."

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm the accountant." Numbers, budgets, telling people that no, widescreen televisions are not an essential expense.

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Zoe nods, and then looks over at Lexa. "I don't really need anything in return," she says. "Really, you don't have to."

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Zoe looks at her and then nods, thoughtfully. She's the same way, really. "Okay," she finally says. "Whatever you come up with."
