Intro / OTA!

So this was it. The Deck. The place she'd spent three years hunting down. The last known whereabouts of her parents. The place she was meant to call home.

She hadn't quite made up her mind about it yet. Only been there a few days, after all. So she'd taken the opportunity to explore the place, starting first with the Spades' castle and branching eventually towards The Town. She kept mostly to herself, prodding around at this and that, soaking in as much as she can without actually forcing herself to speak to anyone. Yet.

Serena watches her a moment before finally shifting into a squat to help her gather the rest of the plastic.

"Where I'm from they have these things called "bags." Useful contraptions. Great for holding things."

"I know, I know. But hey. It's good to play jigsaw every once in a while." Shift shift shift go the trinkets in her arms until they're just right. "Name's Annie Riordan. Never seen you round here before...?"

She watches her things balance precariously in her arms a moment, then returns her attention to her face.

"Serena. Sinclaire. Pleasure," she nodded. "I'd shake your hand, but then we'd be right where we started, wouldn't we?"

"Pretty much, yeah." She cocks her head, curious. "Sinclair? Any relation to Amy and Violet?"

She furrows her eyebrows, shaking her head.

"Who?"

She shrugs slightly, shaking her head. "Just the same name then, huh? Outside's like that. Amy's a Spade- Two now. Violet's her younger sister, a Heart but I can't remember what rank. Lower though, s'for sure."

Hm. It's entirely possible they're related, considering Serena was technically Deck-born, but she'll have to look into that later. She tucks that information away, though.

"I haven't met them yet. Perhaps later," she murmured thoughtfully.

"Yeah, well. Not so hard to spot Amy. Ask any Spade and they'll point her out to you. She had a complete meltdown with a couple of Hearts last month." She glances down the road, clearly meaning to walk on.

"Meltdown? How so?" This one peaked her curiosity. The woman meant to leave, but this was vital information Serena wasn't about to let escape her.

"Oh, uh..." She has the information secondhand, and her eyes drift somewhat sideways as she speaks. "She used to be a guard, see, and there was this deal about... other Suits needing documents to be in Spade Castle? Which isn't actually necessary, but Amy was pushing for it to be made so. And a Heart had already pulled a prank last month- no, month before- burgling a couple of High Spades, so up went Amy's thing about documentation. Um..."

Her lip goes between her teeth briefly before she goes on. "She was still pretty mad when that Heart came back with another Heart- punishment, right? So she picked a fight with them because the other one didn't have any reason to be around. And then they beat her up and broke her arm in self-defense before the Queen and King turned up, plus the Ace. And then she started crying like woah when they demoted her from Six to Two." She can't really wave a hand with all this to juggle, so she shrugs a shoulder instead. "Plus, she and King David've always been pretty close- father/daughterish, not, y'know. But he didn't even save her, so I heard. So. Meltdown."

Serena wasn't exactly much of a gossip, but it was interesting enough to get the scoop on the people she'd be working and living with. Gossip was just that; to be taken fairly lightly until one new the real details from a trustworthy source. And even the source itself couldn't necessarily be trustworthy.

"Interesting," was all Serena replied with, her mind quite obviously processing the information. "Well, it was a pleasure meeting you, Miss Annie." She hadn't gotten a rank, anyway.

Annie doesn't bother mentioning her rank if people don't ask or give her theirs. She thinks it makes them more equal.

"You too, Serena. See you around," she singsongs, smiling at the other woman as she walks away and does her best not to drop anything again.

She would've liked that sentiment, had Annie expressed it. Being a Two meant she was forced to bow to pretty much everyone, which was getting old fairly quickly.

"See you," she nodded, offering Annie a polite smile before turning on her own way.
