[OTA] Accounting for Things

It'd been a few weeks since Eli dropped a case of unaccounted for, missing painkillers from the clinic with no information other than it was gone - and they'd gone missing sometime in the last two months. And while there had been some whispers that the doctor possibly had a problem - she couldn't assume it was him, not when she didn't know for sure.

So she'd gone over all the files she could find. Inventory from before Eli had left, current inventory, injuries that had occurred in the interim. And there was really no accounting for it. Not legitimately, at least, which meant there was a problem, and Zoe chewed on the pad of her thumb as she paced the short length of her office, flipping through printouts.

So far the only that made sense was Dr. Johnson taking them with. But if so, why bring it to her attention?

It was strange, to say the least. Maybe, she thought, it was time to ask someone else about it. Victor had the cameras now, and she really should bring this up with one of the Faces.

Zoe normally is had at work whenever Katya walks past her office. Today, she paces. It is unusual enough, that she puts off errand.

"You are looking thoughtful."

Zoe pauses midstep across the office, looking towards the door. "Yes," she says after a moment, nibbling on the inside of her lip. "Um, Dr. Johnson brought me a problem, milady," she adds. "I've been trying to work through it."

"Problem?" Zoe is not fellow physician. Only so many problems fall under her purview. Katya steps into office proper, closing door behind her.

"Accounting or inventory?"

"Inventory," Zoe said after a pause, and she stopped by the desk, picking up a folder. "He says there's missing painkillers." And not the harmless kind. The harmless kind wouldn't be a problem.

"And he says everything was fine before he left."

"Hmm. Curious. Perhaps he believes you have hand in inventory because of purchasing."

Of course he would say such. Still, there is no reason for good doctor to mention loss at all. He is only person who would notice. "Have you pulled requisitions? I am curious to see if there have also been orders during his absence." They would go through different channels before ending up on Zoe's desk. It would not be first time someone believed they could circumvent system.

"Did you bring this to Victor?" She means in his capacity as security chief, not boyfriend.

Perhaps he wanted to stir trouble - but then, that might be the two weeks of research talking.

She nods. "Requisition, injury logs, all the documentation; there's no reason for oxycodene, vicodin and tramadol to be missing from the clinic." Unless someone was using them for non-medical purposes - and she just could not imagine that going over well in the Spades.

"Not yet," she said. "I was going to ask if he had any cameras in the clinic."

"I do not believe so, but there should be camera in outside corridor as it is public area."

It is fine line between security and invasion of privacy. Most likely some Spade wishes to hide injury. Perhaps she is too trusting, but she is not believing Eli seeks to cover own tracks. There is no reason to draw attention to discrepancy. Still, she should speak to him again. It is possible more know of his affliction or have guessed. Outside possibility is this is attempt to discredit him. Thoughts fly through her mind on instant.

"Urania should have list of injuries. These are all pain medications though it is possible to abuse them."

Zoe leans back and picks up a sheaf of paper, handing it to the Queen. "I got them from her a few days ago," she says. "Nothing matches up; we've had a few challenges and training accidents, but nothing serious enough to warrant these drugs. And the nurse didn't prescribe any of them."

"I always thought pacing was a good look for you," Victor said in a vaguely amused tone as he leaned against the door jamb of Zoe's office. He could, he thought, almost see the wheels in her head turning as she mulled over whatever problem had come to her attention.

A problem he'd not yet heard about- which made it all the more curious.

"Troubles, my dear?"

"I didn't know I paced often enough to make that impression," she said, looking up at him with a half-smile before looking down at her paperwork again and blowing out a breath.

"Do you have any cameras in the clinic, by any chance?"

"That would be unethical," not to say he hadn't thought of ways around it. Like one right outside the door to the clinic. "Why do you ask?"

She glanced over at him. "Too bad," she said after a moment, and then sighed. "Dr. Johnson came in and told me that the clinic inventory's missing...quite a lot of heavy-duty painkillers, and I can't find a good reason for it."

"Interesting that he brought this to you." No offense to his Lady Love, but she was both a four and...an accountant. Not much in the way of solving the bigger issues at hand. It led him to believe there was something more to this than met the eye.

"What did he say about it?"

"Apparently he thinks inventory automatically equals accounting." Her tone made it clear that she'd really wished he hadn't; frankly she had enough on her mind right now. "Not very much, honestly? He just...handed me the inventory files. I noticed the discrepencies when I opened them." She came closer so Victor could see for himself - vicodin, oxycodene and tramadol. Nothing on the list was exactly ibuprofen.

"He claimed everything was fine when he left," she said, looking up. "Do you think it might have been him, anyway?"

"Perhaps, perhaps not." But that did not bode well for the Good Doctor. "The question would be why." He didn't know the Doctor well enough to make that sort of judgement. Perhaps Elisha could shed light on that...but there was not much to say at this point.

"And if he did- why bring it to anyone's attention?" After all, Eli was in charge of the clinic. If no one had reported it before now, why would they do so after his return? Unless it was something new, which pointed to the Doctor in either case.

Curious.

"May I keep those?"

"Well, I'm not getting anywhere with them at this point." But then, this wasn't really her skillset. Zoe was, really, an accountant. Very skilled at the hiding and finding of money, at digging through accounts, but...once that failed, she didn't know what to do, really. And she'd been through every avenue she could think of.

She shook her head as she closed the file and handed it to Victor. "To cover for himself?" she offered. "If it was noticed later, and he hadn't reported it, it would have definitely pointed to him." But then - who, really, would have been taking inventory in the clinic other than him? It wasn't as if he had a nurse full-time. The only person organizing the clinic was Eli himself.

'Perhaps," he said, tilting his head a little before closing the file and tucking it under his arm. "I will see what I can find." There was more than one way to catch a rat after all. And if Eli was behind it, it was better to know now than later.

"Who else knows?" Because the fewer, the better.

"Just Katya," Zoe said after a moment. "She was in earlier. Otherwise, just me and Dr. Johnson." Who hadn't mentioned the thing again, nor had he seemed all that concerned, really.

But then, he never really seemed all that concerned about anything.

"Try to keep it that way?" He asked, his tone suggested it was merely a request- but he hoped it was one she'd keep. If only because it was easier that way.

Turning he started to move out of the room, before stopping and looking back at her. "I thought we might step out for dinner tonight?"

"Not a word," she promised. There was little enough to tell, after all,, and she was smart enough to know that missing drugs was the type of problem that would get too much attention. And that would just be a mess.

Zoe crossed her arms and smiled, leaning one shoulder against the wall. "I'd like that," she said. "Seven?"

'Seven it is." He agreed, before leaning in and kissing her slips softly. "Pick the place, mm?" Hopefully it would be in Spade District. As much as he liked to flaunt the lack of a cane- he didn't fancy walking to Club District on a bad leg. Even if it didn't hurt as much now as it had some weeks ago.

Sometimes it amazed her how impatient Victor was when it came to his leg considering how patient he could be with everything else, but she hadn't bothered to mention that perhaps he should still be on his cane. Some battles were pointless. She leans in and kisses him back. "I'll make a reservation." Some place close to the Castle. It was nice, though, that they actually could have dates again, instead of takeout.
