Davin can currently be found shopping.

No, really. It is apparently time for a new suit. Or a tie. Or a shirt. Or shoes.

Or maybe a hat.

But he's not doing this because of dinner with Avery's parents coming up. That would just be ridiculous. No, he's just in need of some new clothes, that's all. The timing is merely coicidence.

"I was considering Spain, myself." A pause. "Of course, my sisters would all stab me. With forks, probably." Especially Madeleine, who was celebrating her First Christmas As A Married Woman. This was apparently a big deal; Alasdair didn't ask.

"He'd be most appreciative. He can use it as a prop the next time he's standing on his desk bellowing Walt Whitman."

He laughs, "it is difficult to be absent for the holidays when you've family." Not that Davin didn't have family and of course there would probably be some expectation an appearance so he'd stay for part of it, at least.

And besides, this year, he wouldn't want to vacation alone, anyway.

"I've heard he has quite the set of lungs."

"Most of us do," Alasdair said. The exceptions, of course, were those from Outside - and since they were the ones with the most connections to the holidays they all celebrated, he always figured it was hardest for them.

"Should I mention that to him? 'One of your fellow teachers thinks you should've been a politician.'" Davin smiles. "Or an actor."

"Though I suppose there are elements of both in teaching."

"There's no telling what his reaction would be." Though it would take Matt's attention off the 'So how long have you been dating my daughter' conversation, at least.

"There are. More of one than the other, at differing times. Plus, of course: herding."

Davin would never be so underhanded, Alasdair. "Only one way to find out..."

And then he laughs, "herding felines, even?"

Any man in his semi-right mind would be that underhanded. But he just shrugs, and smiles a little bit.

"Somewhere between cats and cattle, I think. Or a combination of them, which is kind of a terrifying thought."

He's going to keep the hat, he thinks. But that still left the need for a good jacket.

They're nice choices. If Alasdair didn't have a budget - the DeWitts were not one of the fabulously wealthy old Deck families - and wasn't wedded to the whole academic hipster look, he might think about the velvet, at least.

"Nah. They make themselves known as time goes on." There's a teacher's pet in every class, after all.

He wouldn't really know. There was a lot of tutoring among Bernards.

"I see. I shall keep that in mind if I ever decide to become a teacher."

Somehow that wouldn't surprise Alasdair in the slightest. There were certain Deck families - Bernards, Novaks, Apollonides, Berthiers - who seemed to think that mixing with other children on a daily basis would hurt their children's potential.

"Oh, but then, how would the Spades acquire all those unusual items they require?" Alasdair asked. He usually went through the man in the Hearts who did the same thing, on the rare occasions that he needed something - and if he wasn't available, Evan McCartney. "Still, I think there's a vacancy in kindergarten."

But he might have to mention to Hadyn that his uncle had expressed ambitions to be a kindergarten teacher. Just because he can.
