[OTA Audience - Zoe] Pumpkin Bake-off challenge (Backdated)

He'd brought the left over pumpkins to the club kitchen, and had told a few of their friends about the challenge. It was a pumpkin pie vs pumpkin flan cook off, between Zoe and Juan Pedro.

They would hold the 'challenge' after dinner, in the mess hall, where they could cook and have people judge which dessert was better.

He had to admit, he was pretty excited about this, pumpkin pie had never been something his family was into, it wasn't a traditional spanish dish, and just not suited to their tastes. But flan, now THAT was something they could stand behind.

He wasn't as good as his mother at cooking, but he could hold his own, and he wasn't about to take this little friendly challenge lying down. So he started whisking cream and sugar, beating them together into a creamy consistency, glancing over to Zoe's half of the counter to see what she was doing.

[This is a JP/Zoe friendly challenge but friends and family are more than welcome to tag in, talk to them during the preparation, and test both dishes and give their votes as to which they like best.]

"Well, knowing how to make yourself a good dinner is a basic component of being an adult." And adulthood is what Chives trains a person for. Not marriage.

Obviously.

"That's what Aunt Maggie told me when I was fifteen." And that was why she'd been drilled in basic cooking - soups, stews, casseroles - during her teen years, before she'd moved out of Charlotte's apartments. She'd cooked more for herself then, really, than she did now.

"It's easier to be independent when you know how, at least."

"Sometimes I think living in the castles can kinda cripple you for that." She kicks her feet idly. "I mean, you've got the kitchens for food, and if you get high enough you don't have to clean up after yourself- or well, you don't and don't have to get butler glares in the bargain. I couldn't really cook until I was six- nineteen."

She looks from one side of the kitchen to the other and grins. "Still can't manage desserts, though."

"They do. I only learned, really, because the Hearts put me in the kitchen when I entered as a Two. And then because when I moved out of my mother's apartment, they gave me one with a kitchen. It seemed a waste to go downstairs for food when I was up late, you know? When I could probably figure out something myself." Not that it'd been very good the first couple of years. A lot of opening cans, dumping them in pots.

"Dessert's pretty fussy. I was burning brownies at this point last year."

"I'll be burning brownies forever, I expect," Annie says thoughtfully. "Only thing I can ever manage is what you put in the fridge, y'know? Homemade ice cream and the like. And even half of what I cook for myself is leftovers in a stew."

Pause. "Don't tell Chives or he'll have a conniption."

"Homemade ice cream is good, though. Especially in summer." Or anytime she was particularly upset, frankly.

She grins, though. "You'd be right next to me with the cooking lessons, and he'd make you learn - I don't know, sole amandine."

She makes a different flavoured batch every month. For feminine reasons. And can be talked into sharing.

"No, just no. Nothing against you, but I do not trust a combination of me and him near any hot liquids."

This is why Five is the best number in the Spades to be at.

"Oooh." She winces. "Which one of you might be goaded into scalding?"

Stay at Five, Zoe. Cease any thoughts of ambition.

"Depends on what you start us on," Annie shrugs. "I mean, unless someone else is standing over us making sure he sticks to instructions and no snippy insults and I stick to just cooking, it's up in the air who gets hurt first."

[identity profile] headfollowheart.livejournal.com 2012-11-02 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's tempting. It really is. If only Edison wasn't such a lazyass.

"He can get snippy." She's only really heard it secondhand, since somehow she's in the safe zone from butler insults. "Some of the things he says to the Threes and Fours I'd smack him on the head for." She says it out of love, Chives.

[identity profile] oneirophiliac.livejournal.com 2012-11-02 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Dammit, Edison.

"As long as he doesn't get personal, he's okay." Unfortunately, they slip into the personal far too often. "You've got to wonder, though, when the Lower Numbers are gonna stage a revolution."

He's just making everyone's life difficult.

"Take back the kitchens?" That has Zoe's eyebrows rising high. "I don't think that would go...well."

"Well, the Chiveses would band together, so it wouldn't just be Chives- I mean, Declán- against the Twos to Fours. Though I'm pretty sure Rap'd throw in his hat against his family." The lone renegade ChivesScallion might probably stir it up in the first place.

"The rest of the castle'd have to eat out for most of it, though."
