cipherspeak: (that's cute darling)

It's Swing Time~

It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Elisha's motivation for organizing - or, honestly, delegating the organization of - a semi-formal dance party. Lucinda had suggested a ball, with stars in her eyes. She probably had already picked out ballgowns and themes in her head when Elisha had nixed the thing and - in a moment of desperation, with the memory of the swing-themed Fox wedding still in his head - suggest a Spring Swing, instead.

Everyone had run with it, and Elisha was pleased to say it had come out well. He was even more pleased to say that he didn't have to wear a suit, even if he stepped out into the lantern-lit gardens in everything but the tie. He paused near the raised dais provided for dancing and gave the small band the signal to start up the music before he attempted to fade back in the crowd. Not that that ever worked.

"Let the games begin," he murmured to no one in particular as he picked up a glass of champagne off a tray.

Note: Open to everyone and their brother; tag around, have fun!

Clive turned at the sound of her face, his brow knotting a little as he regarded her a touch skeptically. It wasn't that he doubted her, others had passed on the same comment in various degrees, but rather that she did it with a smile and, well...a friendly tone that didn't make him want to bang a head into the wall.

"Lady Ivona, you're looking lovely tonight as well. Enjoying the festivities?"

She nodded, gazing out over the busy dance floor, cheeks flushed with delight. "I am, quite. Thank you. It's been far too long since I've been able to attend one of these things without having some secondary agenda to bring about." Politics, Clive, you know.

"But what about you? Oh, you should venture over and speak to Mother. Just to spare me a later inquisition, if you'd be so kind."

"You should certainly try to have a little fun more often then, it makes you glow a little." He said, smiling at her gently. As for stopping by to see her mother, well. He wasn't sure she didn't have an agenda there.

"How do I spare you that? Least I get into trouble unwittingly."

"Because," Ivona explained gently, "then I won't have to make up stories about you for her. How you've been, how the Kingship's working for you, things of that sort." Her expression went slyly saturnine. "Trust me, love, you don't want my ingenuity to get the best of me, now do you?"

"Darling, I never want you to make up stories, they always paint me in a terrible light." He said, reaching up to tuck loose hair behind one of her ears. "I'll be ever so careful to mention I am dating someone should I stop to visit your mother. Promise."

The mention of that idiotic Three made Ivona's eyes tighten almost imperceptibly, but it wasn't really Clive's fault that he possessed the tact of a brick, she thought. He just couldn't help but open his mouth and cram in his foot all the way to his knee. It'd been an endearing quality. Once.

No longer.

"Yes, do that. Then perhaps she'll be able to transfer her idiotic notions of you and me to the former, instead of incessantly haranguing me about it." She smiled, and so perfect was the expression that it was impossible to discern its insincerity.

"But please, don't let me keep you from your...other pursuits."

Whenever Amy came into the conversation, things changed he thought. Probably for the better on his side, seeing as he was dating someone and unlike some men he knew, Clive did try to keep his fingers on one woman at a time. It was better that way, safer.

"Perhaps you'd care for a dance?" He said, out of the blue as he looked down at Ivona and raised a brow. Perhaps she didn't realize it, he thought, that she was still important to him. Even if he wasn't sure he wanted to marry her, or her family.

Instinct told her to refuse. But then, why let the git off so easily? He'd asked, after all. And then there was image to consider, wasn't there. Well, who was she to refuse her King?

"I'd love to, your Majesty." She held out a gracious hand, letting him lead her over to the dance floor, ignoring the raised eyebrows as they passed.
