{wake up calls are never pleasant} ota

"Will she live?"

It was the only question he'd asked the medical staff thus far. And praise be to God that the nurse nodded, rechecking the IV pole at the teenager's bedside. "Call me when she's awake," he ordered, then abruptly turned and exited the medical facility. He had reports to do, a boatload of them.

Three hours later, Ethan sat back in his desk chair and slammed his laptop closed. Done. All incident reports emailed, signed off and all the other nonsense that went along with it. It'd been quite a shock, getting the phone call at three-thirty that morning, from Colleen Starga's father, that the little Two had been found beaten nearly to death in the Castle kitchens and had been rushed to emergency surgery just half an hour ago.

Questioning the staff had given him a name, and honestly, Ethan hadn't been all that surprised. Romaldo Vega had never been one to suffer any sort of insolence lightly and his drinking had gotten heavier over the years. Still, the old Nine was a force to be reckoned with, a nasty survivor of the "old generation" and hellbent to disregard any sort of discipline from the "blunt little Spades" who now occupied the Suit's hierarchy.

Ethan had sent for him, but naturally the old man had refused the summons--although he was dead drunk when the Ace arrived in his suite, unconscious and reeking to high heaven. Taking a full three minutes to collect his temper, Ethan and two Sevens had hauled him to the bathroom, filled the tub with ice cold water, and dumped him in. Naturally this didn't sit well with Ser Vega.

He came up swearing and swinging, but Ethan had been trained by men of Vega's same caliber; he simply knocked the jackass old man back into the tub, doing so every time he tried to clamber up and out. It'd taken a while, but eventually he was able to get most of the story out of the spluttering old fool: he'd gone down to the kitchen looking for another bottle, Colleen had been working--the kitchen staff rose quite early--, she'd told him something or other that'd pissed him off, so he backhanded her for her sass.

Then the little bitch had come at him with a broom, so Vega'd been obliged to show her just what could be done with that sort of weapon, and he'd left her there bleeding and twitching on the damned kitchen floor. That'd teach 'em, wouldn't it? Ethan, carefully containing his rage, hadn't said a word in reply, but simply ordered the Sevens to escort the Nine to the cells belowstairs until his fate was determined.

Which was why at noon, the Ace's office door in Spade Castle was closed and locked, as the man himself was taking a two-hour lunch. Elsewhere.
