Farewell Summer. Welcome Winter.

It's been ten or twelve years since the tradition started and the gardeners don't need reminding. Starting around October, when the leaves are falling in earnest, the Suits start bringing their twigs and branches, trimmings and cuttings, down to the circle edged in stones in an empty field on the edge of Diamond land. It's a small pile at first, but they spread them out wide because it isn't going to stay that way.
Over the last month or so the small pile has gotten higher and higher. It's become a game for the four Suits as they've worked together to build it into a bonfire that will go for hours. As the sun gets lower in the sky, Avery's putting the final touches on the spread of food and drink, a few early arrivals are gathering around the edges of the field, the side-pile of kindling and wood is ready to be fed into the fire to keep it burning bright…everything's finished.
Mel shakes her head at the silly ceremonial first lighting (as she does every year) and finally takes the offered torch and pitches it into the pile of leaves at the base of the tower (as she does every year). They flare up with a satisfying crackle-hiss and the annual Deck bonfire has begun.
Farewell, summer. Welcome, winter.
